Stargate SG-1
Stargate SG-1 is a science fiction television series based on the movie Stargate.

The Stargate is a piece of alien technology discovered in Egypt. It has the ability to transport people across galaxies to other planets. Stargate Command, a classified section of the United States Air Force, is in charge of sending teams through the Stargate to discover alien technology that can help Earth defend itself against enemies (primarily the Goa'uld) and to learn more about alien cultures.

The team SG-1 follows Colonel Jack O'Neill; his 2IC, Major Samantha Carter; the archeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson; the Jaffa, Teal'c; and in Season Six, the alien Jonas Quinn.

Jacob Carter
Jacob Carter is the father of Sam Carter. He is introduced in Season 2's "Secrets." A friend of George Hammond, Jacob is a retired Air Force general. He is a tough man who doesn't like to show his emotions. He has a strained relationship with his children since of the death of his wife, who was killed in a taxi crash when Sam was a teenager. Jacob was supposed to pick his wife up from the airport but was delayed because of work. Sam and Mark, her brother, blamed Jacob and the Air Force for their mother's death. Sam eventually forgave their father and later entered the Air Force Academy.

In "Secrets," Jacob tells Sam that he has cancer. His last wish is to see her fulfill her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut. Sam, of course, can't tell her father what she really does now and why it's better and more important than entering NASA. Jacob can't understand why she refuses to accept his help, so he leaves her on a bitter note.

In Season 2's "The Tok'ra" two-parter, Jacob's condition has worsened greatly, but he refuses to tell Sam how poorly he is doing, much to her frustration. Sam goes on a mission with SG-1 to find the Tok'ra, so she cannot be with him when he takes a turn for the worst.

SG-1 meet the Tok'ra and want to ally themselves with them, but the Tok'ra see no reason to, especially since none of SG-1 volunteers to host Selmak, a symbiote in need of a new host. SG-3 comes to tell Sam her father is dying, but the Tok'ra cannot let them leave since the teams now know where their current base is. When Sam learns that symbiotes can cure hosts of almost any illness, including cancer, she volunteers to ask Jacob if he would become a host for Selmak.

Jacob agrees to see the Tok'ra after Sam and Hammond convince him that the SGC is real. At the Tok'ra base, he meets and talks with Selmak. They get along well, and after Jacob bluntly tells Selmak that they must blend or they'll both die, Selmak announces she likes Jacob. After Jacob and Sam have a heart-to-heart, the blending begins. Unfortunately, the Tok'ra base is being attacked while this occurs, and Jacob cannot be moved while the blending takes place or he will die. Sam and the Tok'ra Martouf stay to keep watch over him. Thankfully, the blending finishes in time and is successful, and Jacob is cured. They return to the SGC, whereupon Jacob leaves almost immediately with the Tok'ra. He agrees to act as liason between Earth and the Tok'ra.

Now a Tok'ra, Jacob spends all his time with them. He appears frequently throughout the series to aid the SGC or to ask them for help. He's a gruff guy, but he genuinely cares for Sam. He gets along pretty well with all of SG-1, but he comes into conflict with them at times because of the tenuous nature of the alliance between the Tok'ra and Earth. As he states in Season 4's "Tangent," he has a unique understanding of both Earth and the Tok'ra, having lived as both. Selmak is the oldest and wisest Tok'ra, so having her in him seems to help; she's very practical, and she asks Sam for help in resolving Jacob's conflicts with Mark, which occurs in Season 3's "Seth."
